Removals from London to Italy

A move that has been talked about for years before the lorry arrives. Tuscany farmhouses, Milan fashion-industry transfers, Rome diplomatic, Lake Como apartments, Le Marche villages, Puglia masserie. Slower than Spain. Higher engagement per move.

Italy from London is the move that has been part of the household conversation for years before the booking actually books. The Tuscany farmhouse has been in the family since 2010 — visited in summer, restored in stages, talked about every Christmas. The Milan fashion-house posting has been on the cards since the autumn collection wrapped. The Rome diplomatic posting has been dependent on a security clearance that finally came through. The lorry shows up in Hampstead, Notting Hill, or Battersea for a household that has been mentally between London and Italy for a long time.

The destinations spread further than any other route in our network. Tuscany — Florence, Lucca, Siena, the Chianti and Val d'Orcia hill villages — is the volume anchor; the customer profile is empty-nest household, lifestyle-driven, often with a long-renovating restoration project. Milan is the fashion and finance anchor — Notting Hill and Knightsbridge fashion-industry transfers, City finance moves, design-sector relocations into the Brera and Navigli districts. Rome handles diplomatic, academic, cultural-sector, and the established Anglo-Italian Vatican-adjacent flow. The Italian Lakes — Como, Garda, Maggiore — pull a higher proportion of professional-retirement moves than the Tuscan rural pattern. Le Marche and Puglia handle the slower restoration projects and the newer creative-sector Anglo-Italian wave.

Customs runs in the EU customs union. We file the UK export declaration and the Italian import declaration; the Italian residenza at the destination comune is the residency anchor for the customs relief filing. Routing options vary by destination: Ventimiglia for Tuscany and the western coast, the Brenner Pass via Switzerland for the lakes and Veneto / Friuli, occasional ferry consolidation to Civitavecchia for southern destinations or Sardinia. The longer northern routing crosses two customs unions (UK→EU→Switzerland→EU); we handle the paperwork either way but the schedule reflects the route.

London angles

What we see
on this route from London.

  • Hampstead / Highgate / Notting Hill empty-nest moves to Tuscany — Florence, Lucca, the Val d'Orcia. Restoration-property contents, family-furniture-older-than-the-house profile.
  • Notting Hill / Knightsbridge fashion-industry transfers to Milan — Brera, Navigli, the broader Lombardy design and finance belt.
  • Camden / Islington diplomatic and academic moves to Rome — Trastevere, Centro Storico, the international-school neighbourhoods (Trieste, Parioli).
  • Battersea / Clapham professional retirement to the Italian Lakes — Como, Garda apartment-block deliveries with predictable access.
  • Stratford / Walthamstow creative-sector moves to Puglia — Lecce, Ostuni, the Itria valley masserie restoration projects.

6 listed

Tuscany

Florence, Lucca, Siena, the Chianti and Val d'Orcia hill villages. The volume anchor. Restoration-property moves are common; older buildings with narrow stair access often need a smaller transfer vehicle for the final mile. Hampstead and Highgate empty-nest profile dominates.

Milan

Fashion, finance, design, manufacturing. Brera and Navigli apartment-block access often needs the smaller transfer vehicle (the inner-Milan ZTL restricted-traffic zones add timing constraints). Notting Hill and Knightsbridge fashion-industry transfer profile dominates.

Rome

Diplomatic, academic, cultural-sector, Vatican-adjacent. Trastevere and Centro Storico restrict large-vehicle access strictly; the smaller transfer vehicle is the default. Family-home stock outside the historical centre (Parioli, Trieste, EUR) is more straightforward.

Italian Lakes

Como, Garda, Maggiore, Iseo. Apartment-block deliveries dominate; lift access varies. Higher proportion of professional-retirement moves than the rural Tuscan pattern. Battersea, Clapham, Hampstead profile.

Le Marche

Ascoli Piceno, Macerata, Fermo, the Apennine villages. Quieter than Tuscany; established Anglo-Italian micro-communities. Older property stock and rural-lane access — smaller transfer vehicle the norm.

Puglia

Lecce, Ostuni, the Itria valley masserie, Polignano a Mare. Newer Anglo-Italian pattern; creative-sector restoration projects. The longer onward leg from the Italian entry port adds transit time honestly stated in the quote.

Customs path

End to end.
No surprises at the border.

Italy is inside the EU customs union. We file the UK export declaration before departure and the Italian import declaration at the entry port (Ventimiglia from the French Riviera approach, or via Switzerland and the Brenner Pass for lakes and northern destinations). Transfer-of-residence relief is filed against your residenza registration at the destination comune. The standard six-month possession rule applies. You provide passport, residenza confirmation, and a signed inventory. The Italian codice fiscale (tax code) isn't needed for the customs filing but you'll want one for utilities, rental contracts, and property purchases.

Pre-survey checklist

Three things
to flag at survey.

  1. No.01 Whether the destination is rural Tuscan / Marche / Umbrian (narrow lanes, restoration-property access) or urban (Milan ZTL-restricted, Rome heritage-restricted, lakes apartments) — the final-mile transfer vehicle and the schedule shape differ materially.
  2. No.02 Whether the move includes contents staged for a property still mid-renovation — partial-load consolidation and storage at the Italian end may be needed; we quote both legs explicitly when it applies. Common for the Tuscany and Le Marche restoration-project profile.
  3. No.03 Whether the Brenner Pass routing (via Switzerland) or the Ventimiglia routing (via French Riviera) is preferred — northern destinations usually go Brenner; western-coast and Tuscany go Ventimiglia. The Brenner crossing adds Swiss customs even though the destination is EU; we handle either way.

Route-specific questions

Asked and
answered.

The most-asked questions for the London-to-Italy route specifically. Cross-route questions live in the general FAQ on the dedicated page.

Restoration property — can the lorry stage contents while building work finishes?
Yes, with two caveats. We need a destination address that can take a partial load (a barn, an outbuilding, a secured area) — we don't leave contents on a lawn next to scaffolding. And the customs relief application timing matters: the contents have to clear customs into your residency, which means you need the residenza registered before we can file the relief. For mid-renovation cases we sometimes split the move into two legs with storage in between, quoted explicitly.
Milan ZTL — does the restricted-traffic zone affect the move?
Yes, in the inner districts. Brera, the Quadrilatero della Moda, central Navigli — the ZTL restricts large-vehicle access during specific hours and a permit is sometimes needed from the Comune di Milano. The smaller transfer vehicle handles the final mile and the loading window is built around the ZTL hours; both go in the quote. Outer Milan (Niguarda, Lambrate, Affori) takes a full lorry without issue.
Are mountain villages with narrow approaches actually deliverable?
Most of them. We assess from photos at the survey stage — the vehicle for the final mile depends on the approach width, the parking situation, and any restricted-traffic-zone (ZTL) timing in the historical centre. The smaller transfer vehicle handles cases the full lorry can't. If a village really can't take any vehicle wider than a Fiat Panda, we say so before booking; that's rare but it does happen.
Rome diplomatic relocation — anything special?
The diplomatic-status documentation (Carta d'Identità diplomatica, embassy accreditation, the protocollo di residenza) runs through the embassy's relocation channel, not us. Our customs filing supports the standard transfer-of-residence relief; the diplomatic accreditation runs in parallel. For the embassy or institutional employer that's running the relocation, we handle the corporate-billed AP path on the same documentation pattern.
